Genre Studies The Omen as a Horror Movie Essay In the 2006 movie, The Omen, Robert and Katherine Thorn have just lost their child. Robert makes a deal to replace their son with an orphan child who they later named Damien. As the child grows, Katherine notices something weird with Damien, in which he never gets sick. As the film unfolds, horrible things happen and Robert Thorn discovers that his son is the Antichrist and he must decide whether or not he must kill his only child. A film can be decided which genre it belongs to by seeing if it fits the generic conventions of a genre. Each genre has its own generic conventions. In which makes each genre unique and identifiable in its own way. This is the same with the horror genre. The Omen is a horror film and these are the reasons why. The common theme of a horror movie is usually good vs. evil. It is quite black and white and there are no room for doubts as who is the villain in a movie. According to , horror films are have the most morals out of all the films out there, because it is the genre where you can have clear lines between good and evil, black and white, without the gray. In The Omen, it is obvious that the ‘villain’ on the movie is Damien Thorn, who is believed to be the Antichrist. In Christianity, the Antichrist is believed to be the son of the devil, as opposed to Jesus Christ, who is the son of God. You obviously can’t be more evil than that. At this revelation, audience would root for the obvious good, even though evil came in a form of a young boy. The Omen is also heavy on religious themes, as it concerns the birth of the Antichrist that will start the Apocalypse. Father Brennan would recite passages from the bible, even urging for Robert Thorn to take communion. In American horror film, even if the film is horror, it does not have to have religious themes. However, for the Malaysian film industry, it seems fundamental to have religious themes in horror films. In fact, religion iconography would end up saving the day or offer protection from evil supernatural forces. In the end of the movie, it shows that the pope died while Damien did not. It symbolizes that evil had triumphed over good. The plot of the film is a simple one and it centres around the protagonist, Robert Thorn and the antagonist, Damien Thorn. As the main plot tells the story of Damien and his slow rise of being the Antichrist, the subplots tells the lives of minor characters and their inevitable death. The inciting incident would be the adoption of Damien by the Thorns, as this seems to be the first step of his ‘rise to power’. The climax of this movie is when Robert Thorn is about to kill Damien but he decided not to. That seems to be the climax as that was the most important decision as it would stop the Apocalypse. The resolution would be the President of the United States taking in Damien and raising him. The plot is clearly about good vs. evil, and evil had won and continue to live. Furthermore, there is the subplot, where Keith Jennings tries to prevent his own death. Keith Jennings knew that he was going to die because he saw a shadow in the photograph of his reflection. Also, most horror films, especially supernatural horror, have linear narrative. This is because the common use of flashbacks is to reveal answers to the audience. Many churches are shown in the movie, in fact as the movie was largely set in Rome, which is closely related to Christianity. The hospital Katherine was giving birth in had large cross on the wall, giving the audience the sense of irony because the Antichrist himself was given birth there by the Jackal. The sense of irony continues on until the end of the film where Robert was about to kill Damien in a church but he failed and died instead. This is ironic since it symbolizes evil won instead of good, even if good has the upper hand. The lighting in The Omen also plays a part in why it is a horror movie. Lighting in a movie allows the filmmaker to create the atmosphere. Usually horror movies would have low-key lighting. Even if it the scene were set in broad daylight, it would seem bleak and dark. This creates a sense of impending doom and darkness. For example, on the day of Damien’s birthday, even though it was a sunny day, the low-key lighting made the scene more ominous. Also, the lights within the movie play a part as well. Flickering lights would build up suspense. Not only that, The Omen’s characters matches the characters in stereotypical horror movie that features the supernatural. There is a priest, as usual. In almost all supernatural-themed horror films, there would at least one person who is affiliated with religion. In The Omen, it would be Father Brennan. There will also be a non-believer, a character that doesn’t believe in the supernatural, at least he or she doesn’t initially. For this film, it would be Robert Thorn. Father Brennan would try to persuade Robert Thorn into believing him about Damien is the Antichrist. Robert Thorn is the non-believer who in the end believes and even has to kill his own son. It is interesting to note that the antagonist is a six-year-old child. In horror movies, it is common for children to be ‘haunted’ and used as the instrument of ghosts and spirits, but they are rarely possessed. In this movie, the child itself is the reincarnation of evil. There are also various mise en scene which is common in the horror genre. There is frequently an element of isolation, where the characters would have a hard time asking for help. For example, the Thorns’ mansion and Katherine Thorn’s hospital ward as she died. She was isolated and helpless against Mrs. Baylock. As for the costumes, most of it is black. Robert Thorn wears black most of the time, as well as Damien. The most prominent colour in the movie is black as it symbolizes death. The props are also worth noting, such as crucifix, the Daggers of Megiddo and the Bible. Lastly, The Omen utilizes the sound effect and background music to create suspense and fear in the movie. It is an important element in a horror movie. Pollution control and waste management Essay The Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (the Department) has recognised that they are not always successful in policing and enforcing environmental laws. However, the Department is making strides to meet these challenges and to ensure that our laws are practically implemented. In March 2000, the Department published its White Paper on Integrated Pollution and Waste Management (the White Paper). The White Paper proposes a number of tools to implement the objectives of the waste management policy it sets out. The promulgation of new pollution and waste legislation such as the amendments to the Environment Conservation Act, 73 of 1989 (ECA) comprise one such tool. The objective of the Environment Conservation Act: Amendment Bill, 2003 (the Amendment Bill) is to facilitate governments general policy on integrated pollution control and waste management so as to give effect to waste management as proposed in the White Paper. The Amendment Bill will amend the ECA in three separate ways: †¢ the management of waste sites will be transferred from the Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry to the Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (the Minister); †¢ the Minister will have the power to make regulations for the imposition of compulsory charging for identified waste streams (for example, plastic bags) and deposit systems (for example, second-hand non-reusable tyres); and †¢ the Minister will have the power to make regulations regarding products which, by their nature, may pose a hazard to the environment and/or human health if and when they reach the waste stream (for example, asbestos products). Transfer of power The ECA governs environmental waste pollution. In particular, the ECA provides for the permitting and related control measures for the operation of waste landfill sites. The ECA specifically stipulates that the Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry should administer these facilities. In accordance with the governments philosophy on integrated pollution control and waste management inherent in the White Paper, the amendment transfers the administration of these facilities from the Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry to the Minister. Economic incentives In order to promote recycling and waste minimization in respect of certain waste streams such as plastic bags, glass and tyres, certain additional regulatory powers will be allocated to the Minister. The Amendment Bill proposes a financial incentive approach which will complement the existing traditional command and control approach to controlling pollution. Whereas the command and control approach relies either on administrative sanctions (for example, permitting requirements on scheduled emissions) or criminal measures (for example, fines or imprisonment if such permit conditions are breached) to regulate pollution emissions, the amendment will give the Minister the power to make regulations to encourage the re-use, reduction and recycling of specific waste types. To this end, the proposed amendment to the ECA provides that the Minister may make regulations with regard to waste management, concerning the imposition of compulsory charging, deposits systems and levies on certain waste types or specified items in waste types. The intention is that the revenue raised from such charges will be used to encourage recycling and a compulsory deposit system will promote the collection and return of types of waste. A compulsory charge on a particular waste will encourage its re-use, for example, the controversial compulsory charge on plastic bags has promoted re-use. The Minister intends to use these mechanisms to impose a deposit scheme on second-hand and unusable tyres and glass. Regulating products Currently, the ECA does not give the Minister or the Department regulatory power over products, materials or substances that may cause harm to the environment or human health should these enter the waste stream (for example, asbestos, which is found in building material, friction material and other elements). The Department does not have regulatory powers over such substances until the relevant material becomes waste. The Amendment Bill will give the Minister the power to make regulations with regard to the prohibition, control or regulation of products that may have a detrimental effect on the environment or on human health if and when they reach the waste stream.

Shakespeare, in Sonnet 18, conforms somewhat to this custom of love poetry, but later breaks out of the mold entirely, writing his clearly anti-Petrarchan work, Sonnet 130. In Sonnet 18, Shakespeare employs a Petrarchan conceit to immortalize his beloved. He initiates the extended metaphor in the first line of the sonnet by posing the rhetorical question, "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" The first two quatrains of the poem are composed of his criticism of summer. Compared to summer, his lover is "more lovely and more temperate" (2). He argues that the wind impairs the beauty of summer, and summer is too brief (3-4). The splendor of summer is affected by the intensity of the sunlight, and, as the seasons change, summer becomes less beautiful (5-8). Due to all of these shortcomings of summer, Shakespeare contends in the third quatrain of this sonnet that comparing his lover to this season fails to do her justice. Towards the end of the poem, the speaker contemplates whether death is merely the state of hibernation, meaning that there is life after death or just â€Å"human sleep† where the speaker is able to wake up the next day only to find that he has to continue living his old life. In line 12: â€Å"And held against the world of hoary grass†; the word â€Å"hoary† means frosty, the poet has chosen this specific word in order to show the speaker’s pessimistic view about the world and reiterate the speaker’s contemplations about death. > Structure: The poem is not structured into any stanzas because the whole poem is one stanza. It contains forty-two lines but only fourteen sentences. If the sentences were highlighted, it would look like the steps of the ladder mentioned in the second line of the poem. These â€Å"steps† emphasize the speaker’s longing to die in order to go to heaven. The poem has multifarious end-rhymes, but it doesn’t have a regular pattern. â€Å"I was well/Upon my way to sleep before it fell/And I could tell† is an example of some end-rhymes that allows readers to vicariously imagine an image where the speaker is drowsing off with his head slowly going down and up again. The rhyme words â€Å"well†, â€Å"fell†, and â€Å"tell† emphasizes deep sleep. There were also some assonance present in the poem: â€Å"Stem end and blossom end,† and â€Å"Magnified apples appear and reappear†. These assonances were also used to provide readers with a drowsy feeling. The number of syllables of each line of the poem varies from two to eleven syllables. The longer lines of the poem add to the sleepy mood of the poem but the short and abrupt lines create a sense of hesitation and the sudden awake of the speaker from his sleep.
